David
Dorn is an ocean lover, instructor, and all round waterman. Australian born, he
began travelling to the Hawaiian islands over 25 years ago. After his travels
David decided to make Maui
his permanent home over 14 years ago. David background includes being; an
accomplished windsurfer, sailor, surfer, kiteboarder,
competitor, retailer, manufacturer, repairer and designer, promoter, innovator
and educator in the watersports industry. David's
twenty-eight year career in watersports instruction has
spanned the globe and has encompassed a variety of watersports including:
Windsurfing, Surfing, Sailing, Parasailing, Skin-diving, Scuba diving, Water-skiing
and Kiteboarding. David created
Action Sports Maui from his ten-year vision of bringing the very best watermen
in each field together to create an Advanced Water-sports Training Center
that caters to the highest levels of windsurfing, surfing and kiteboarding. Since moving to Maui David has become very active in all levels of the watersports
community. He has sponsored Community children’s windsurfing and surfing programs. He has
been active in the preservation of water access for windsurfers and has successfully
worked with the FAA to restore maintain kitesurfing access on the north shore. David's
total dedication to the ultimate watersports lifestyle is a lifelong
commitment. David has written several books on watersports instruction and has
produced several training videos. David is currently
a certified kiteboarding instructor examiner at the top levels of the IKO instructor trainer system. David runs
instructor training courses across the state, and was a competitive kiteboarder & accomplished kitespeedsailor. David won
the Navman speed series kite division
in 2005 , and held the un-official Kiteboard-speedsailing
record on Maui, clocking over 40mph, using stock equipment on an open
water course. David also enjoys the challenges of long distance inter-island, channel
crossings. David is an advocate of the watersports community and
promoter of many aspects of ocean-safety education. David continues to be at the
forefront of kiteboarding education, promotion and community awareness. He does
regular training sessions with the County Lifeguards in Kite safety techniques
with the jet skis. He recently wrote the "teaching kiteboarding to kids"
instruction syllabus for the IKO. David has recently run a series of
Kiteboarding Instructor Certification training courses, in Mexico, California,
Oregon. He also hosts Women's Kite Clinics, and is the lead instructor at the
Youth Power, Summer Kids Windsurfing Camps on Maui. David is the primary
instructor trainer for Surfing Windsurfing and Standup Surfing. and co-promoter
of the Kids Ocean Discovery Surfing programs.
Master Windsurfing Instructor Teaching since the mid 80's, David trained for and
acquired the AYF windsurfing instructor certification in 1990 from Master
instructor and former Olympic sailor Greg Johns (The instructor's instructor)
and original creator of the AYF's windsurfing accreditation system. David
became a certified Master Board Sailor in 1994, which is a level
of certification attained by very few. Then in 1996 David Dorn was one of the three most
highly qualified Windsurfing Instructors in the Australian Certification
System gaining the level of Master Instructor. David made contributions to the
training programs and was instrumental in the re-creation of the windsurfing teaching
system in Australia. David teaches the Youth Power Kids Windsurfing
programs.
Certified Surfing Coach David became a Certified Surfing Coach with the (A.S.P.) Australia's
professional surfing association for instruction. David has been teaching
surfing on Maui for over 14 years and is responsible for the Safe Surfing
system implemented by Action Sports and other Hawaiian surf schools. David
teaches the Kids Ocean Discovery Surfing Camps. David also teaches the SUP,
Standup Surfing courses.
Windsurfing Instructor Trainer David is a U.S.Sailing Certified windsurfing Instructor
(Training under Thino Dornellas) and trained to become
a Windsurfing Instructor Trainer. He runs Windsurfing
Instructor Training courses and introduces the latest techniques
into the training programs.
Certified Kitesurfing Instructor A Certified Kitesurfing Instructor under the
KISS Kitesurfing system since 1997. A Certified Kiteboard Instructor with the Wipika System since 2001
(training with Wipika's master trainer, Paul Menta), David became a certified
Kiteboard Instructor with the IKO since 2003 (Training with IKO Examiner Darren
Marshall from Australia). David was qualified as a KITES Instructor since 2004
(Training with the system's creator John Holzhall), David has qualified for
instructor equivalency under the PASA teaching System. David became a level2 in 04,
then senior Kiteboard Instructor with the IKO since 2005.
Kitesurfing Instructor Trainer David was one of the first kitesurfing
teachers on Maui. He later became a Certified Kitesurfing Instructor under the
KISS Kitesurfing system. Later he graduated to Kitesurfing Instructor Trainer,
and has been running kitesurfing instructor courses on Maui for over 12
years. David is the Director of the Kitesurfing Instructor Training
Center on Maui. David is also certified as an IKO
(International Kiteboarding
Organization) Instructor Examiner, one of the top thirteen Kiteboarding
Instructor Examiners in the world, International Kiteboarding Organization.
David runs the IKO instructor Training courses (ITC's) on Maui twice annually.
Medic First Aid/CPR
Trainer David Dorn is a certified Medic FirstAid /CPR trainer. He is
available to run Medic First Aid CPR Courses across the state. David conducts
one-day courses for individuals and groups.
IKO Kiteboarding Instructor Examiner David is
a Certified IKO Instructor Examiner. Personally trained by the International Kiteboarding
Organization's founder and original instructor trainer
Eric Beaudonnat. David is qualified to teach IKO instructor training
courses (ITC's) anywhere in the world, and has been running several ITC
Instructor courses per year since
2006 and is already taking advanced bookings for 2010. David can be booked through the IKO website to do the
Assistant Instructor courses, & the ITC instructor training courses,

Lessons: David teaches all levels of kiteboarding, surfing and windsurfing.
David teaches advanced group clinics, and IKO Instructor Training Courses, and
kite-safety clinics. He is also
available for private instruction & coaching by appointment. David is usually available
year-round and will travel to Inter-island, mainland and international locations
by arrangement (POA).
